Numan is a professional percussionist with more than 25 years of experience. He devoted himself to the study of percussion and rhythms in an attempt to perfect the Indian split-finger style by mastering and combining the skills learnt from playing various percussion instruments such as Tabla, Ghatam and Kanjira.
Passionate about rhythm, Numan recalls how he used to drive his mother crazy with his constant tapping. Numan's main instrument is the darbuka, an hourglass shaped drum with a single head, best known in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He also plays the frame drum, davul, gatam, bongos, dhol and djembe.
From small beginnings in Turkey - playing at a basketball match, a wedding, a restaurant, - Numan has gone on to perform with Natasha Atlas, Eduardo Niebla, Abdelkader Saadoun at Womad and with Mukka as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Now settled in London, he regularly plays with several bands including Nara, Damask and classical Indian groups. He runs darbuka workshops and is an active session musician working with, amongst others, Terry Hall of the Specials.
Numan's range, ability and ear for all rhythms enables him to play many musical styles beyond those of the Middle East. He is a staunch romantic who feels the rhythm of London’s heart-beat in his own heart-beat. He deeply feels this rhythm and looks for those who would feel the same to share his experience and skills. His ambition is to push the instrument and himself to its limits, believing that : "What you are is God's gift to you, what you make of yourself is your gift to God."
